Chicken, Alaska is a surviving gold rush town with a summer population that occasionally cracks double digits. The story goes that residents wanted to name it “Ptarmigan” after the local bird, but nobody could agree on the spelling, so they just called it Chicken. There’s a gift shop, a café, and an amount of gold panning that is deeply optimistic.
