Apollo Theater
Entertainment · Historical
The Apollo Theater at 233 W 125th St in Harlem has been open since 1914 and launched Amateur Night in 1934. It played a foundational role in the emergence of jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, and soul. Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill all broke through here. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most important music venues in American history. And now it’s on the SuperList.
